As you may already know, SIPs – structural insulated panels – are a high performance, lightweight construction system used for floors, walls and roofs. Benefits include fast installation, thermal performance and efficiency, but what are some of the lesser-known facts?
1) Extra Floor Space
Due to their compact nature, SIPs provide insulation and strength using less space. Meaning that you actually save on precious floor space. This extra space is derived from the fact that no masonry or internal timbers or cladding are necessary and therefore take up less space and accordingly provides extra floor space internally.
2) Superior Thermal Performance
SIP insulation exceeds current building regulations, without the need for additional materials. This is achieved by a solid core of polyurethane insulation throughout the structure. This in itself provides an extra layer of insulation thus enabling less heating to be used and accordingly less energy usage in general.
3) Resource Efficient
SIPs are resource efficient, using 35% less timber than traditional framing methods. Less wood in the construction is in many ways more resource efficient than a traditional build. The Green Energy Movement, in particular, advises that this method of building is efficient particularly because the wood element used comes from new growth timber, which is a renewable source.
